About the role#
As a Machine Learning Engineer Intern, you will work on the core technology that powers the Waymo Driver. You will join a team focused on building and refining large-scale models to improve autonomous driving performance. This is a full-time position for Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Train and fine-tune large multi-task transformers over driving-log sequences using JAX and Flax on TPUs.
- Iterate on fine-tuning strategies, training data mixtures, and loss functions to improve evaluation quality.
- Design and run offline and end-to-end evaluations, including PR-AUC, calibration quality, and metric sensitivity on real hillclimbing A/B runs.
- Build the necessary dataset and evaluation pipelines.
- Write and land production-quality code in a shared, high-traffic codebase.
- Communicate your findings through design documents, team deep dives, and a final intern presentation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD or MS program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, with plans to return to your program after the internship.
- Hands-on experience training and evaluating deep learning models in frameworks like JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Experience building data pipelines, selecting loss functions, and debugging training runs.
- Strong programming skills in C++ and Python.
- A solid foundation in machine learning fundamentals, including precision/recall trade-offs, class imbalance, evaluation metric selection, and experiment design.
- Preference is given to candidates with published papers in top-tier AI/ML, data mining, or computer vision conferences.
- Preference is given to experience with transformer and sequence models, multi-task learning, or domain adaptation.
- Preference is given to experience with JAX/Flax, distributed training on TPUs or GPUs, and large-scale data processing.
- Familiarity with autonomous driving, robotics, simulation, or uncertainty quantification is a plus.
