About the role#
This internship focuses on the evaluation and modeling of autonomous driving technology. You will join the Data Science team to work on projects related to safety evaluation, simulation technology, driving quality, and rider experience. You will collaborate with various teams to provide data science rigor and influence the development of critical systems for self-driving technology and fleet operations.
What you'll do#
- Analyze large-scale on-road and simulation data to build metrics, statistical models, and predictive features.
- Quantify the safety and driving quality performance of the Waymo Driver.
- Develop and validate statistical and machine learning methodologies, including estimation, uncertainty quantification, sampling, and extrapolation.
- Use or evaluate large-scale foundation models to draw reliable conclusions about rare and critical events from limited data.
- Build tools and pipelines that turn one-off analyses into repeatable workflows.
- Partner with engineering teams to automate data exploration, triage, and reporting.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics.
- Proficiency in Python or R, including experience with data manipulation, wrangling, and visualization.
- A strong foundation in statistical theory.
- Experience in machine learning applications and complex data analysis is preferred.
- Familiarity with SQL or C/C++ is preferred.
- Experience processing and interpreting high-dimensional data is preferred.
- Demonstrated research capabilities through publications.
- A strong understanding of statistical methodologies and foundation models.
- Prior internship experience.
