About the role#
The Sustaining Engineering Intern supports the Busbar Sustaining Engineering team in maintaining and improving released products. This role focuses on real-world manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and product support challenges for existing products. You will gain hands-on experience in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment while contributing to product reliability and operational excellence.
What you'll do#
- Investigate manufacturing and production issues alongside sustaining engineers.
- Support the resolution of drawing discrepancies, BOM errors, and configuration issues.
- Participate in shop floor observations and data collection.
- Assist with Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs).
- Update drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) while verifying documentation accuracy.
- Help maintain engineering records within PLM and ERP systems.
- Participate in structured problem-solving to identify root causes of manufacturing issues.
- Support Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives to improve quality or reduce costs.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams on process improvement projects.
- Complete a structured internship project focused on product or process optimization and present findings to engineering leadership.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Completed at least your sophomore year.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Exposure to manufacturing processes and engineering drawings is preferred.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD software is preferred.
- Coursework in manufacturing processes, quality engineering, materials, or mechanical design is preferred.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement concepts.
- Previous experience through internships, engineering projects, robotics, or Formula SAE.
