Student Assistant - TSE - Special Collections

About the role#

The Special Collections Student Assistant supports the Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) department at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. This role focuses on increasing the visibility, accessibility, and accuracy of collections while facilitating research use. You will handle unique and one-of-a-kind materials, requiring a high degree of caution and diligence to ensure their preservation.

What you'll do#

• Interface with patrons to facilitate research use of collections while upholding access policies.
• Contribute to digital projects by creating and updating metadata, ingesting digital images, and reviewing uploads for accuracy.
• Assist with instruction, exhibits, and programming as requested.
• Perform holdings maintenance, including retrieving and shelving collections, shelf reading, and rearranging books to ensure proper storage.
• Review legacy collections, reconcile inventory discrepancies, and update descriptions according to best practices.
• Digitize materials and perform basic preservation tasks.

What you'll need#

• High school diploma.
• Current enrollment at the University of South Florida (minimum 1 credit hour).
• Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word and Excel) and Adobe Acrobat.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs and push 50 lbs, including navigating confined and elevated storage areas.
• Availability to work scheduled hours between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
• Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and complete assigned tasks.

• Term: Rolling, expected to extend through the academic year.
