About the role#
The Graduate Assistant joins the Office of Student Affairs to support the management of student leaders and oversee daily operations for Outdoor Programs. This role functions as part of the department leadership team, reporting to the Director of Recreation and Outdoor Programs. You will help develop programming curriculum, facilitate student training, and guide the growth of outdoor initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Support student leaders in the planning, coordination, and execution of outdoor trips.
- Attend and facilitate Apprentice and Trip Leader Trainings, which occur on approximately four weekends per year.
- Oversee rental and bicycle shop operations while working with student managers to refine systems and customer service.
- Recruit, train, and supervise student employees.
- Collaborate with campus partners and community organizations to expand outdoor recreation opportunities.
- Develop initiatives that increase participation, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Mentor student leaders through ongoing training and experiential learning.
- Assist the Director with program assessment, data collection, and student learning outcomes.
- Serve as an on-call resource during designated trips and programs.
- Support broader Student Affairs initiatives, including New Student Orientation and commencement events.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Education, or a related field.
- Two years of experience planning and facilitating outdoor trips, including logistics, budgeting, and risk mitigation.
- A valid California Class C driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification.
- Preferred qualifications include a Leave No Trace Master Educator certification or Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

- This position is based in Redlands, California.
- The role is part-time at 20 hours per week.
- Work takes place in both office environments and outdoor field settings, including high-elevation and desert locations.
