About the role#
UL Solutions is seeking a motivated intern to join our Renewable Energy Advisory and Independent Engineering teams. You will contribute to the development of analytical services by working on multiple projects in parallel and collaborating with staff at all levels. Depending on project needs and your background, you will be assigned to support either our Wind, Solar, or BESS energy advisory groups. This 10-12 week internship includes networking, learning opportunities, and professional development.
What you'll do#
- Learn the full spectrum of pre-construction resource assessments and energy production modeling.
- Identify project risks by reviewing project design, technology, contracts, and financial model inputs.
- Support project financing transactions and contribute to technical due diligence reviews.
- Assist with internal projects, research, and technical writing.
- Enhance analytical tools and processes.
- For Wind: Compile meteorological data, run atmospheric models, and support spatial planning for wind farm locations.
- For Solar: Conduct long-term resource assessments, uncertainty analysis, and energy yield estimates for bankability.
- For BESS: Review equipment supply agreements and validate technical inputs for financial models.
- Prepare draft sections of Independent Engineering reports and QA/QC logs.
- Support site inspections and construction monitoring where applicable.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's (rising senior) or master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, Renewable Energy, Atmospheric Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated interest in renewable energy technologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong communication skills, including writing and presenting technical information.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Familiarity with power systems or electrical fundamentals is preferred.
- Experience with Python or R, specifically with data manipulation libraries like Pandas, is a plus.
- Exposure to financial models and a process-improvement mindset regarding automation or tool development are preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Northbrook, IL or Chicago, IL (On-site).
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Compensation: $23.00-$25.00 per hour.
- Additional: Qualified candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus to assist with housing, travel, and relocation expenses.
