About the role#
Toyota Research Institute is seeking a Robotics Research Intern to join the team for the Winter 2027 term. This is a paid, full-time, hybrid internship based in Los Altos, California. You will contribute to our mission by advancing AI, robotics, driving, and material sciences.
What you'll do#
- Advance research in AI and robotics systems.
- Collaborate with engineers and fellow researchers on technical projects.
- Communicate your research findings clearly to the team.
- Translate fundamental research into methods that can be tested on real robotic systems.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Ph.D. program for Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related field.
- Research experience in areas such as robot learning, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, generative modeling, or world models.
- Proficiency in Python and deep-learning frameworks like PyTorch.
- Interest in large-scale machine learning grounded in physical systems.
- Experience with pretrained generalist policies, foundation models, or large-scale robot-learning systems is a plus.
- Familiarity with simulation, sim-to-real transfer, policy distillation, or robotic manipulation.
- Knowledge of offline or online reinforcement learning, DAgger, interactive learning, or human-in-the-loop methods.
- Experience with learned world models, model-based reinforcement learning, or planning.
- A publication record or interest in publishing at conferences such as CoRL, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, RSS, ICRA, or IROS.
