The Children's Law Center is seeking candidates to sponsor for externally-funded public interest fellowships, including programs like Equal Justice Works, the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, and law school-sponsored fellowships. This role focuses on developing projects related to representing children under the age of 21 in New York City Family Courts. Fellows will act as legal representatives in proceedings including custody, visitation, guardianship, paternity, and child protective cases. This position is contingent upon the successful securing of external fellowship sponsorship.
What you'll do#
- Represent children as subjects or parties in assigned cases, including conducting trials and all related legal proceedings.
- Perform factual investigations, including interviewing children, caretakers, and witnesses.
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda of law, motions, and appellate briefs.
- Develop policy recommendations and contribute to organizational efforts to support clients and their families.
- Work both independently and collaboratively with staff.
- Maintain case calendars and files in accordance with office best practices.
What you'll need#
- J.D. or expected J.D. by the Fall of 2027.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and serving children from diverse, low-income backgrounds.
- Strong legal practice, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage a diverse, demanding caseload while meeting deadlines.
- Respect for and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
