About the role#
The Athletic is seeking a student intern for the Leon H. Carter newsroom program. This 12-week position runs from June 2027 to August 2027. You will join the Daily Desk team to gain experience as both an editor and a reporter. Half of your time will focus on editing, while the other half involves reporting and writing. You will connect with various editors and reporters across the newsroom to build professional relationships.
What you'll do#
- Attend daily meetings with Daily Desk editors.
- Edit stories filed by different sports verticals and communicate with reporters.
- Generate story ideas based on current news.
- Work writing shifts focused on breaking news.
- React quickly to news events in both reporter and editor capacities.
- Expect to work nights and weekends.
What you'll need#
- Undergraduate student status, ideally in your junior or senior year.
- Availability to work 30 to 40 hours per week.
- Deep knowledge of and interest in sports.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work environments.
- Previous newsroom internship experience is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship.
- The role is remote, with some travel to New York City required.
- Candidates based in New York City may work on-site at the office.
- The internship is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
