About the role#
The Autonomous Charging team is building new technology for vehicle charging. We are looking for an intern to help design electromechanical systems for our vehicle and supercharger product lines. You will work with a small group of engineers to solve problems related to high-voltage insulation, sealing, and mechanical robustness. Everything you work on will be new, as we are creating systems from the ground up.
What you'll do#
- Design electromechanical assemblies, including actuators, structural enclosures, thermal solutions, and electrical interconnects.
- Use CATIA 3DX to create 3D designs and 2D drawings with GD&T.
- Perform mechanical analysis, such as thermal FEA, CFD, kinematics, statics, and vibrations.
- Solve packaging challenges related to EMI performance, sealing, and mechanical loading.
- Build prototypes and support system-level testing.
- Develop test plans, analyze results, and identify root causes for failures.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and testing teams to integrate assemblies into larger architectures.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, or a related field.
- Strong grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals and physics-based problem solving.
- Experience with CATIA V5 or V6.
- Knowledge of GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability.
- Basic understanding of electrical design, including power electronics, thermal management, and high-voltage isolation.
- Familiarity with material science for components like plastics, metals, gaskets, and connectors.
- Ability to document work clearly and communicate with team members.
- Experience with student projects like Baja, Solar Car, or Formula Vehicle is a plus.
- Familiarity with PLM systems is helpful.
Location & details#
- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Term: This position starts in January 2027. We require a minimum of 12 weeks of full-time, on-site work.
- Duration: The role continues through the Winter/Spring term, with potential for extension into Summer 2027.
