About the role#
As a Sorbent Chemist Co-op, you will support the research and development of advanced sorbent materials for carbon-capture applications. You will focus primarily on porous polymer sorbents for direct air capture, with opportunities to assist in metal-organic framework development. This role involves laboratory-based synthesis, experimental testing, and data analysis to advance sorbent performance.
What you'll do#
- Conduct laboratory experiments related to porous polymer sorbent synthesis.
- Perform and analyze material characterization using techniques like FTIR, TGA, particle size distribution, and gas sorption analysis.
- Document experimental results accurately and maintain detailed laboratory records.
- Research scientific literature to support development activities.
- Communicate findings through technical reports, presentations, and team meetings.
- Manage laboratory operations, including chemical inventories, SDS documentation, purchase requests, and experimental setups.
- Follow health and safety requirements and lean culture practices.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of a Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related degree program.
- At least 8 months of academic or industry laboratory experience.
- Hands-on experience with sorbent or materials development.
- Experience in two- to three-step small-molecule organic synthesis and purification.
- Exposure to characterization techniques such as FTIR, TGA, PSD, gas sorption analysis, SEM, XRD, or NMR.
- Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data independently.
- Strong organizational, research, and communication skills.
- A detail-oriented and safety-conscious approach to laboratory work.
