About the role#
The Oregon Public Defense Commission is seeking law students for Fall 2026 externships. You will work within the Trial Division alongside public defense attorneys. This role offers hands-on experience in indigent criminal defense and provides exposure to the practical side of litigation. Please note that this is an unpaid externship. Externs are not considered employees and do not receive salary or benefits.
What you'll do#
- Assist attorneys with legal research and writing.
- Help with case preparation and client-related tasks.
- Observe court proceedings.
- Work on projects that support public defense services throughout the state.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ABA accredited law school.
- Completion of your first year of law school.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Strong research and writing skills.

- Locations: Salem, Medford, or Portland, Oregon.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site.
