About the role#
The Archives and Records Management Internship provides hands-on experience with the digitization of archival cultural material. This role offers an opportunity to learn about the archives and records management profession within a museum setting. The intern will work one-on-one with the Associate Records Manager to support the preservation and accessibility of institutional records.
What you'll do#
- Inventory, lightly process, and perform holdings maintenance for archival materials in preparation for digitization.
- Complete internal and external research scan requests.
- Upload digitized assets to the digital asset management system (DAMS) and input descriptive metadata.
- Develop and improve procedures relating to digitization standards and practices.
- Participate in SFMOMA Archives inventory projects, including the assessment of posters, audiovisual materials, and press materials.
- Track project progress using task-management applications.
- Complete a final metrics report of all digitization work performed during the term.
What you'll need#
- Current student in or recent graduate of a Masters-level program in library science, records management, museum studies, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Experience handling fragile objects, specifically paper and audiovisual materials.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft 365 (including Teams and SharePoint), and task-management tools like Asana and Airtable.
- A demonstrated interest in archives and records management within a museum environment.
Location & details#
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Commitment: At least 3 hours per week.
- Modality: Fully on-site. Workspace is divided between the museum’s Third Street location in San Francisco and the Collection Center in South San Francisco.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Applicants must provide proof of eligibility to receive school credit.
