Archives and Records Management Intern: Digitization

About the role#

This internship provides hands-on experience with the digitization of cultural materials and offers insight into the archives and records management profession within a museum setting. Working one-on-one with the Associate Records Manager, you will gain experience in the full lifecycle of archival digitization, from initial inventory to final metadata entry.

What you'll do#

• Inventory, lightly process, and perform holdings maintenance for archival materials to prepare them for digitization.
• Complete internal and external research scan requests and upload assets to the digital asset management system (DAMS).
• Develop and improve procedures, standards, and documentation related to digitization practices.
• Participate in ongoing archival inventory projects, including the triage of unprocessed collections such as posters, audiovisual materials, and press materials.
• Track progress using task-management applications and complete a final metrics report of your digitization work.

What you'll need#

• Current student in or recent graduate of a Masters-level program in library science, records management, museum studies, or a related field.
• Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft 365 (including Teams and SharePoint), and task-management tools like Asana and Airtable.
• Experience handling fragile objects, specifically paper and audiovisual materials.
• A demonstrated interest in archives and records management, particularly within a museum environment.

Location & details#

• Term: Fall 2026.
• Commitment: At least 3 hours per week.
• Modality: Fully on-site at San Francisco, California. Workspace is divided between the museum’s Third Street location and the Collection Center in South San Francisco.
• Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Applicants must provide proof of eligibility to receive school credit.
