About the role#
As a co-op in the CMC Synthetics Platform, you will contribute to understanding how material properties at the particle and crystal scale influence downstream manufacturability and drug product performance. This role bridges material science, process engineering, and computational modeling to support pharmaceutical development. You will work on projects ranging from single crystal property prediction to powder compaction simulation and experimental analysis of tablet mechanical failure.
What you'll do#
- Predict and analyze single crystal material properties, including mechanical behavior, elastic properties, and anisotropy.
- Evaluate how crystal structure and morphology influence downstream processing and manufacturability.
- Design and execute experimental studies to characterize tablet mechanical performance.
- Use digital image correlation (DIC) and imaging tools to quantify strain localization, crack initiation, and failure mechanisms.
- Integrate experimental and modeling results to improve the understanding of material-process-performance relationships.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate findings into predictive frameworks for formulation and process design.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- Permanent authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for visa sponsorship.
- Enrollment in an accredited college or university for the duration of the co-op.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, on-site in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Interest in material science, solid mechanics, and pharmaceutical process engineering.
- Familiarity with data analysis and scientific programming, such as Python, MATLAB, or R.
- Experience or exposure to solid-state chemistry, crystal structure analysis, powder mechanics, or pharmaceutical unit operations.
- Familiarity with molecular modeling tools like Mercury or Materials Studio, and computational tools such as Abaqus or COMSOL.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work autonomously in a lab setting.
Location & details#
- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
- Term: Winter 2027
- Modality: On-site
- Employment: Full-time, paid position
