About the role#
This summer internship focuses on the development of a rapid, non-destructive Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy method to measure moisture content in lyophilized drug products. As a Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tool, this project aims to enable faster moisture analysis and support the future implementation of 100% vial testing. You will work within our formulation development team to help improve the stability, quality, and performance of lyophilized pharmaceuticals.
What you'll do#
- Operate freeze-drying and lyophilization equipment and prepare formulations across specific moisture-content targets.
- Perform Karl Fischer (KF) titration and acquire NIR spectra using established laboratory procedures.
- Develop, optimize, and evaluate chemometric models, such as PLS regression, to correlate NIR spectra with KF moisture measurements.
- Process and analyze experimental data, assess model performance, and support method optimization to reduce false-positive and false-negative results.
- Document findings, conduct experiments under supervision, and contribute to technical reports, posters, and presentations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting, including operating equipment and recording data.
- Comfort working with data using tools like Excel or JMP.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to document experimental work in a structured manner.
- Effective communication skills and a genuine interest in learning about lyophilization, PAT, spectroscopy, and analytical methods.
Location & details#
- Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is a full-time, on-site position.
