Helpline Interns work directly with individuals experiencing domestic abuse, supporting the 24/7 helpline which serves as the primary connection point for survivors. This role focuses on survivor-centered, trauma-informed care and empowerment. Interns gain practical experience in social services while supporting internal infrastructure projects, intake procedures, and policy development. This is an unpaid, part-time position that may fulfill practicum requirements for undergraduate programs in fields such as Public Health, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Political Science, and Human Resources.
What you'll do#
- Assist callers by connecting them with services, providing emotional support, and offering referrals without bias.
- Learn, practice, and refine trauma-informed active listening skills.
- Complete data entry for after-hours case forms and input helpline voicemails for follow-up.
- Maintain and protect the confidentiality of callers, client records, and shelter locations.
- Verify and format contact information for the organization's resource database.
- Provide feedback on the helpline training program and assist staff with ongoing infrastructure projects.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as available.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a 2- or 4-year college or university.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite, with a willingness to learn new technology platforms.
- Demonstrated history of dependability and reliability.
- Ability to maintain a trauma-informed environment for callers, clients, and staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high level of attention to detail.
- Passion for the organization's mission.
Location & details#
- Location: Greenville, South Carolina (multiple sites within Greenville County).
- Term: Fall 2026 (14-week commitment from August 24, 2026, to December 4, 2026).
- Time Commitment: Minimum of 10 hours per week, with at least 5 hours per shift. Consecutively scheduled shifts are preferred.
- Mandatory Training: Completion of 4–6 hours of virtual coursework is required prior to an in-person, three-day orientation held August 3–5, 2026 (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Unpaid.
