Lab Assistant - Medical Technology Student

About the role#

This is a per diem position specifically for students currently enrolled in a Medical Technology program. Under the direction of licensed staff, you will support laboratory operations by performing simple procedures, maintaining inventory, and assisting with equipment verification. This role provides hands-on experience in a clinical lab environment.

What you'll do#

• Retrieve samples from Specimen Processing and deliver them to the appropriate testing department.
• Sort and load samples onto lab automation systems.
• Perform daily sample pending reviews, monitor batch testing, and locate missing samples.
• Maintain reagent inventories, receive and stock ordered items, check expiration dates, and log media and reagents.
• Perform quality control verification of laboratory equipment, including pipettes, timers, and balances.
• Conduct daily support system checks for equipment like water and deionized water systems.
• Provide proficiency testing support by receiving surveys, ordering in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and filing paperwork.
• Notify departments of resolutions regarding specimen discrepancies and refer unresolved issues to Medical Technologists or supervisors.
• Follow all departmental policies and safety procedures to reduce the risk of blood and body fluid exposure.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Medical Technology program.
• Strong data entry and computer skills.
• Ability to understand written instructions and communicate information accurately.
• Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of billing issues.
• Physical ability to perform medium work, including exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and frequent walking, standing, or squatting.
