About the role#
As an intern in our National Tax Office, you will work alongside professionals on emerging tax developments and controversy matters. You will support organizations as they navigate an evolving tax environment and their interactions with the Internal Revenue Service. This role is intended for students currently pursuing a degree who plan to return to school following the internship. You will be treated like entry-level staff, focusing on complex technical issues and translating them into practical guidance.
What you'll do#
- Evaluate tax planning strategies resulting from federal legislation, regulations, court cases, and market developments.
- Research technical positions, draft memos, and consult with clients on federal tax matters.
- Engage with the IRS and prepare responses to exams, appeals, and collections.
- Conduct technical research and write memoranda to support tax positions and exam responses.
- Draft private letter ruling requests and assist with proactive planning for future tax positions.
- Write internal and external tax alerts on current developments, controversy topics, and emerging planning techniques.
- Interact with staff at all levels and our clients.
- Deepen your knowledge of tax law through hands-on experience with sophisticated technical issues.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a JD, LLM, or Master's degree in Taxation.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Strong interest in tax law, tax controversy, and emerging tax issues.
- Ability to analyze complex topics and communicate conclusions clearly in writing.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Detail-oriented approach.
- Prior coursework, experience, or demonstrated interest in tax research, legal writing, or controversy matters is preferred.

- Locations: Southfield, Traverse City, Macomb, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Detroit, Auburn Hills, and Ann Arbor, Michigan; Toledo, Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, Ohio; Broomfield, Fort Collins, and Denver Tech Center, Colorado; Schaumburg and Chicago, Illinois.
- Work Modality: Hybrid.
- Employment Type: Full time.
- Compensation: $33 - $36 per hour (for roles in CO, IL, OH, and MA).
- Note: This position may require work hours exceeding 40 hours per week and some local, national, or international travel.
