About the role#
As a Governmental Accounting Practice Intern, you will work directly with public sector clients including cities, schools, and libraries. You will join a team focused on providing financial staffing and consulting support. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience, and you will be treated as an entry-level staff member. You will have access to training and development opportunities to support your professional and technical growth.
What you'll do#
- Provide financial staffing and consulting support to public sector clients.
- Assist with accounting functions such as bank reconciliations and budget development.
- Perform year-end close of financial records and prepare for annual audits.
- Verify, allocate, and post client transactions to journals or computer files.
- Compile and analyze financial information to prepare general ledger entries.
- Work independently or in teams to improve client accounting operations, including drafting policies and procedures.
- Analyze financial information regarding assets, liabilities, and equity.
- Prepare balance sheets, statements of revenues and expenditures, and other financial reports.
- Collaborate with consultants and clients to provide improvement recommendations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program with an emphasis in accounting, or a Master's degree program in accounting or tax.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, technical, and analytical skills.
- Preference for candidates on track to complete the credits required to sit for the CPA or CIA exam.

- Term: Summer 2027.
- Locations: Southfield, Flint, East Lansing, Detroit, Auburn Hills, Ann Arbor, and Macomb, Michigan.
- Work Modality: Hybrid.
- Employment Status: Full-time, paid internship.
- Note: This is a non-exempt position that may require work hours exceeding 40 hours per week. The role may involve local, national, and occasional international travel.
