Substation Engineering Intern

About the role#

As a Substation Engineering Intern, you will support the design and infrastructure projects essential to California's electrical grid. You will work alongside experienced engineers to assist with the interconnection of generation, capacity demand increases, and system reliability improvements. This role is a hybrid position based in Oakland, CA, for the Summer 2026 term.

What you'll do#

• Support team members in the design of transmission and distribution substations, including both indoor equipment like SCADA, relays, and switchgear, and outdoor equipment such as transformers and circuit breakers.
• Create and update technical drawings, including single line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, control room layouts, and conduit schedules.
• Assist in evaluating and cross-checking engineering projects to ensure high-quality design delivery.
• Promote safe work practices in accordance with corporate safety policies.
• Collaborate with various departments, including construction, maintenance, and asset strategy.

What you'll need#

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at an accredited university.
• A cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or greater.
• Experience with or coursework using AutoCAD.
• Reliable transportation to and from the work location.
• EIT or FE certification is desired.

• Compensation: $24.52 to $35.37 per hour.
• Travel: Approximately 10% travel within the service territory may be required.
