About the role#
As a Software Engineering Intern, you will build the user interfaces and backend systems that allow our team to run the fusion demonstration facility. You will work alongside controls engineers, scientists, and operators to develop software that presents real-time system state, manages configuration, and supports safe operations.
What you'll do#
- Develop and improve web-based user interfaces for system status, health monitoring, experiment configuration, and diagnostics.
- Build backend services to serve real-time and historical facility data.
- Manage configuration, metadata, and system state.
- Interface with controls systems and data pipelines.
- Support integration between UI applications, backend APIs, and facility systems.
- Write maintainable code and participate in code reviews.
- Test, debug, and validate software used in live environments.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, with a preference for Junior, Senior, or graduate students.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- At least 6 months of previous internship, co-op, or academic project experience outside of normal classes.
- Coursework or experience in software development fundamentals and web or backend programming.
- Familiarity with at least one of these languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, or Python.
- A basic understanding of client-server applications, APIs, data flow, and SQL or NoSQL databases.
- Availability to work full-time and on-site for at least 12 consecutive weeks, starting between mid-May and mid-June 2027.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.
- Work is required on-site in San Leandro, CA, Fremont, CA, or Los Lunas, NM.
