About the role#
We are looking for a Public Affairs & Policy Intern to help define the rules for space solar energy operations. You will support a Department of War (DoW) energy investment program by researching policy and translating it into actionable concepts. You will work directly with our government engagement team on tasks that serve as funded DoW deliverables.
What you'll do#
- Research U.S. policy and regulations for space and ground-based beacon operations.
- Translate complex policy into CONOPS language for our engineering team.
- Identify and profile DoW sites for testing, including environmental and airspace considerations.
- Support warfighter engagement by preparing briefing materials and capturing feedback.
- Route feedback back into our design and operational processes.
- Draft an operator manual specifically for the warfighter.
- Create engagement materials to explain our technology to non-experts.
- Track DoW expectations against production to identify and flag gaps.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's program in public policy, government, international affairs, communications, or a related field.
- A demonstrated interest in defense, space, or energy policy.
- Ability to write clearly and quickly for non-expert audiences.
- Comfort with primary source research, including statutes, DoW directives, and federal frameworks.
- We have a strong preference for candidates with ROTC participation, prior military service, or coursework in military operations.
- Experience on Capitol Hill, in the Executive Branch, or with the DoW is preferred.
- Familiarity with laser safety, space systems, or airspace coordination is a plus.
- Interest in a long-term career in the Executive Branch or the military is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, part-time, hybrid position based in Ashburn, Virginia.
- The role runs from September 2026 through March 2027.
- You must be able to commit 3-5 hours per week.
- This position is subject to U.S. Government space technology export regulations (ITAR). You must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or a protected individual to qualify.
