About the role#
NVIDIA is looking for an AI Compiler and Kernel Intern to apply machine learning and performance engineering to compilers, GPU kernels, and developer tools. You will work alongside compiler, kernel, and AI engineers on a project involving code analysis, performance experiments, and system optimization. Depending on your interests, your work may focus on agentic workflows, learned models, compiler optimization, or AI-enabled developer tools. We do not expect candidates to have experience in every area.
What you'll do#
- Build AI-agent workflows that interact with code, compilers, GPU kernels, and performance tools.
- Develop tools to help agents collect data, run experiments, and identify optimization opportunities.
- Explore data-driven approaches for compiler optimization, performance prediction, and workflow automation.
- Create interfaces between AI agents and compiler or developer-tool infrastructure.
- Prototype improvements to compiler flows, code generation, and GPU kernels.
- Collaborate with architecture and performance engineers to evaluate ideas on representative workloads.
- Measure outcomes including correctness, runtime performance, compile time, and resource utilization.
- Document your design, experiments, results, and next steps.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C, or C++.
- Solid foundations in data structures, algorithms, and quantitative problem solving.
- Coursework or project experience in AI, machine learning, compilers, GPU kernels, CUDA, or performance engineering.
- Ability to design experiments, analyze results, and communicate findings clearly.
- Experience in AI, compiler, kernel, or systems areas.
- Background in building AI agents, LLM applications, or developer tools is a plus.
- Familiarity with LLVM, MLIR, or compiler optimization passes.
- Experience writing or optimizing GPU kernels using CUDA or Triton.
- Hands-on experience with reinforcement learning, predictive modeling, or high-dimensional data analysis.
Location & details#
- Location: Austin, Texas.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
- Compensation: 20 USD to 94 USD per hour, depending on experience and degree level.
