About the role#
NorthWestern Energy is seeking a Legal Intern to support the Legal Department. You will gain hands-on experience in regulatory matters, contractual issues, and in-house legal practice. This role provides exposure to public utility regulation and energy law while you work alongside attorneys and business professionals to support company operations and compliance.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal research and analysis on regulatory, contractual, and operational matters.
- Prepare legal memoranda and other written work product.
- Assist with document review, case preparation, and regulatory filings.
- Attend Montana Public Service Commission work sessions and hearings.
- Participate in legal team meetings, business discussions, and regulatory proceedings.
- Collaborate with attorneys and internal stakeholders to address legal questions.
- Maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Organize and maintain legal records and reference materials.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Law (J.D.) program, having completed at least your first year.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and maintain confidentiality.
- Good academic standing with your GPA included on your resume.
- A legal writing sample submitted with your application.
- A good safety record.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with legal research platforms and writing practices is helpful.
- Previous legal internship or clerkship experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership in student organizations or law review is preferred.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Helena, Montana.
- The internship runs from May through August 2027.
- Work is on-site, though part-time telecommuting within the service territory may be negotiable.
- Pay is $24.00 per hour for 1L students and $25.00 per hour for 2L students.
- This is a full-time, temporary role.
- Sponsorship for work visas is not available.
