About the role#
The Synthetic Biology and Bioconversion group is seeking a year-round intern to support metabolic engineering research. This full-time position focuses on the generation, screening, and optimization of engineered bacterial strains intended for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. You will work alongside postdoctoral researchers and research scientists to validate physiological hypotheses in a laboratory setting.
What you'll do#
- Engineer bacterial strains to test physiological hypotheses.
- Screen and optimize strains for biomass-derived and C1 molecule conversion.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebook documentation.
- Communicate scientific findings to team members.
- Formulate hypotheses and interpret experimental results.
- Maintain a clean, safe laboratory environment with minimal supervision.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program, or completion of such a degree within the past 12 months.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, specifically DNA cloning and transformation.
- Demonstrated experience in microbiology, including sterile techniques.
- Strong organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work safely and independently.
- Majors considered include Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Data Science, and Mathematics.
