Graduate (Year-Round) Intern: Geospatial Data Science Modeling and Analysis

About the role#

The Geospatial Data Science (GDS) team is seeking a graduate intern for a 6–12 month, full-time position. This role supports research at the intersection of energy deployment, big data science, and geospatial modeling. You will work alongside geospatial scientists, software developers, and policy analysts to develop analytical solutions for energy siting, deployment, and adoption challenges.

What you'll do#

• Manipulate multiple data sources, models, and software tools to support decision-making and data analysis.
• Prepare and process geospatial data using open-source desktop software and programmatic approaches.
• Conduct background research on datasets, modeling approaches, and existing tools.
• Develop literature reviews under the guidance of research scientists.
• Program and script in Python to conduct analysis and visualize data.
• Work within distributed computing environments, including internal servers, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, and the cloud.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment as a full-time student in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program, or completion of a degree within the past 12 months.
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Demonstrated experience working independently with Python programming.
• Proficiency in geospatial analysis and modeling techniques using open-source tools (e.g., QGIS).
• Ability to provide a resume and an online code repository (such as GitHub) featuring publicly visible projects.
• Academic background in Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Data Science, Physics, Mathematics, or Civil Engineering.
