About the role#
The Nashville Zoo offers a 4th-year veterinary student externship for those pursuing a career in exotic animal medicine. This role provides hands-on experience within an AZA-accredited zoo. You will work alongside veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and hospital keepers to support the medical care of the zoo's animal collection.
What you'll do#
- Assist with day-to-day medical operations, including preventative and emergency care.
- Participate in examinations, clinical procedures, surgeries, and necropsies.
- Provide laboratory support, including hematology, parasitology, and cytology.
- Manage animal husbandry for hospitalized and quarantined patients.
- Maintain thorough medical records for all cases and procedures.
- Research and study current and upcoming cases.
- Help the hospital function by stocking supplies, wrapping surgical equipment, and maintaining cleanliness.
- Present a 25 to 30-minute presentation to the animal care staff on a research project or relevant topic.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in the clinical year of veterinary school.
- Ability to commit to a minimum of 40 hours per week for at least 4 weeks.
- Ability to perform duties without direct supervision and follow oral or written directions.
- Capacity to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift 30 pounds.
- Willingness to work with a large variety of animals.
- Ability to function effectively as part of a team with paid and volunteer staff.
- Ability to interact positively with the public.
- Responsibility in using and maintaining zoo equipment and tools.
- Completion of a criminal background check and proof of a negative TB test.

- This position is located in Nashville, Tennessee.
- The role is on-site and requires a minimum 4-week commitment.
- This is an unpaid externship, though housing is provided.
- Weekend, holiday, and some evening work may be required.
