About the role#
The Sea Otter Program studies the health of wild otter populations and works to restore southern sea otters along the central California coast. This internship supports staff with field observations and data collection for wild and previously rehabilitated sea otters. You will work along the Monterey Peninsula and other coastal areas of central California.
What you'll do#
- Collect data from shore and occasionally from a small boat using radio telemetry equipment.
- Make visual observations using spotting scopes.
- Record daily re-sights, movement patterns, forage observations, and activity budget data for marked individual sea otters.
- Assist with population monitoring and reporting.
- Complete a project-based report by the end of your internship.
What you'll need#
- You are at least 18 years old and a current student or recent graduate within one year of finishing your degree.
- You have a resume showing relevant coursework or experience, plus two letters of recommendation.
- You can commit to 24 hours per week for six months.
- You have a valid California driver license or can obtain one within one month of starting.
- You have a personal vehicle for fieldwork and a cell phone.
- You are comfortable working in the elements for up to 8 hours at a time.
- You can lift up to 50 pounds and walk over hilly terrain.
- You have a flexible schedule that includes weekend work.
- You have previous experience in fieldwork or behavioral data collection.
- You have an interest in animal behavior, natural history, and marine science.
- You possess skills in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with ArcGIS or R is helpful.

- This position is based in Monterey, California.
- The role is on-site and requires a six-month commitment.
- This is a paid internship at $18.00 per hour.
- Housing is provided.
