About the role#
The Michigan AFL-CIO offers a part-time, paid internship for students interested in labor communications. This role is an educational opportunity designed to provide exposure to public policy and media strategies. You will work under the supervision of the Press Secretary or Graphic Designer to observe and support communication efforts. This is a temporary position, and you will work 12 to 14 weeks per term.
What you'll do#
- Research labor issues, public policy, and current events.
- Compile media scans, research summaries, and content audits.
- Proofread and fact-check draft materials.
- Organize digital files and maintain content calendars.
- Prepare draft content such as social media posts, mock press releases, or graphics for review by staff.
- Participate in projects to build skills in writing, editing, and digital media.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or master's program, with at least sophomore standing.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, and LinkedIn.
- Basic experience with graphic design or video editing tools.
- A willingness to learn about public affairs, digital media, and communications.
- Majors in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, Business Administration, or Graphic Design are preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid position based in Lansing, Michigan.
- You must commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, though 20 hours is preferred.
