Fire Marshal, Emerging Talent Intern (Fall)

About the role#

The Long Island Rail Road Office of the Fire Marshal is seeking an intern to support fire safety and prevention programs. This role focuses on ensuring the safety of customers and employees through the enforcement of fire codes, the maintenance of fire protection systems, and the coordination of emergency response readiness. This is a paid, on-site internship for the Fall 2026 term.

What you'll do#

• Identify potential fire life safety hazards and track remediation efforts.
• Assist with fire safety inspections, hot work permit inspections, and fire and evacuation drills.
• Ensure the reliability and maintenance of all fire protection systems and equipment.
• Interpret construction documents and architectural drawings.
• Update building pre-plan data and communicate findings to relevant personnel.
• Provide support for operational and emergency event preparation.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an undergraduate program (minimum 2.5 GPA) or graduate program (minimum 2.8 GPA) in Finance, Mathematics, Physics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
