About the role#
Meta is looking for PhD students to join the Fundamental AI Research team. You will work on systems that power AI research, focusing on how large-scale training, inference, and autonomous agents share compute resources. This role involves end-to-end research, from framing problems to experimentation and publication. You will drive your own project with mentorship rather than following a predefined task list. Internships last between 12 and 24 weeks with rolling start dates.
What you'll do#
- Identify and formulate open research problems regarding how AI workloads use and share large-scale compute.
- Plan and execute original research, including new abstractions, algorithms, and empirical evaluation.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to create published work and open artifacts.
- Communicate your findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, operations research, or a related field.
- A first-author publication record at a top-tier systems or ML venue such as OSDI, SOSP, NSDI, EuroSys, ASPLOS, SC, MLSys, or NeurIPS.
- Proficiency in Python and at least one systems language like C++, Go, or Rust.
- Experience with cluster schedulers or resource managers like Kubernetes or Slurm.
- Experience with workload characterization, performance modeling, or large-scale system simulation.
- Experience applying ML to systems problems or building infrastructure for LLM training, inference, or agents.
- Intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
- Must obtain and maintain work authorization in the country of employment.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship.
- Positions are located in Menlo Park, California, and New York, New York.
