About the role#
The Ads Quality team focuses on long-term user value within Facebook Ads Recommendations. We decide which ads to show to ensure they provide value for users while maintaining the experience that keeps people returning. We are looking for researchers to frame practical problems in ads recommendation as machine learning challenges. You will work alongside research scientists and software engineers to build new solutions for ranking systems that account for long-term engagement rather than just immediate clicks or conversions.
What you'll do#
- Advance the science of long-term value modeling in large-scale recommendation systems.
- Create new causal and sequential machine learning methods to estimate how ads affect future user engagement.
- Design offline evaluations and online experiments to test if new signals improve outcomes for people and advertisers.
- Improve the efficiency, scalability, and stability of ranking systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners and communicate your research plans and results.
- Publish your findings and contribute to research applied to product development.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or pursuit of a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Operations Research, Economics, or a related field.
- Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the country of employment.
- Experience with Python, C++, C, or Java.
- Proficiency with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Experience building systems using machine learning or deep learning methods.
- Research background in causal inference, recommender systems, reinforcement learning, or sequence modeling.
- Intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
- A record of research achievements, such as publications at conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, RecSys, WWW, or WSDM.
- Specific experience in reinforcement learning, causal inference for decision-making, or large-scale sequence models.
- Demonstrated software development experience through internships, projects, or open-source contributions.
Location & details#
- Location: Menlo Park, California.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time intern.
- Duration: 12 to 16, or 24 weeks, with various start dates.
- Compensation: $7,650 to $12,667 per month.
