About the role#
Lithium Americas is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join the Maintenance Team at the Thacker Pass production facility. This role supports mechanical engineering activities for plant equipment, commissioning, maintenance, and operational readiness. You will work alongside engineering, operations, maintenance, and construction teams to gain hands-on experience with mechanical systems in an industrial processing environment.
What you'll do#
- Promote a safety-first culture by complying with OSHA and MSHA requirements, supporting Stop Work Authority, and identifying potential hazards.
- Assist mechanical engineers with engineering support for plant equipment including pumps, piping, valves, tanks, heat exchangers, and compressors.
- Support equipment inspections, field walkdowns, troubleshooting, and the identification of mechanical issues.
- Help with commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.
- Collect, organize, and analyze equipment and operating data to identify performance and maintenance opportunities.
- Perform basic engineering calculations for fluid flow, heat transfer, equipment sizing, and mechanical systems.
- Support the review and development of technical documentation, such as P&IDs, equipment specifications, and maintenance records.
- Participate in Management of Change and root cause analysis activities.
- Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and various internal departments to support equipment installation and testing.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Completion of at least sophomore-level engineering coursework by the internship start date.
- Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principles including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanics.
- Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work safely in an industrial plant and active construction environment.
- Willingness to learn in both office and field settings.
