About the role#
The Opto-Mechanical Engineering department at L3Harris Technologies is looking for a student to join the team as a junior engineer. You will work on hands-on projects related to imaging systems, supporting senior engineers with testing, data analysis, and design activities. This role offers a supportive environment where you can take on technical challenges and gain practical experience.
What you'll do#
- Test complex precision mechanics and opto-mechanical assemblies, including infrared and visible imaging lenses.
- Create advanced test setups to measure the performance of electro-mechanical and optical systems.
- Develop and implement new automation capabilities.
- Generate data analyses to support senior design engineers.
- Evaluate commercial technologies and identify potential suppliers.
- Assist with the development of new assemblies by generating CAD models and drawings.
- Execute engineering changes and release processes.
- Support production and test tooling design while following established mechanical engineering standards.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelor or advanced degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, Physics, or a related field.
- Ability to commit to a 16-month co-op term, with 12-month terms occasionally available.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering, precision mechanics, and opto-mechanical design principles.
- Proficiency in mechanical CAD software, with Solidworks experience preferred.
- Experience with Matlab or similar software packages.
- Knowledge of electro-mechanical drive design and materials science, including corrosion, composites, and surface coatings.
- Experience working in mechanics or optics lab environments.
- Familiarity with optical design software like Oslo, CodeV, or Zemax is an asset.
- Understanding of basic optics principles, such as geometrical optics, lens design, radiometry, and thin-film coatings, is an asset.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to solve problems independently.

- This role is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
- The position is on-site and full-time.
- Compensation is $25 per hour.
