About the role#
The Mechatronics team in the RAPID Division is looking for an intern to develop a model-based control framework for a precision motion stage. You will work on building a high-fidelity dynamic model based on measured stage performance and implement robust control methods to improve system operation.
What you'll do#
- Build a high-fidelity dynamic model from measured stage performance.
- Use modern model-based control methods to design a robust controller.
- Deploy your controller to the stage hardware.
- Measure and evaluate controller performance.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an MS or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with frequency-domain loop shaping and robust control synthesis, such as H∞ or μ-synthesis.
- Proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink for modeling, analysis, and control design.
- Experience with system identification and fitting models to measured FRF data.
- Knowledge of multivariable (MIMO) systems, modal analysis, and cross-axis coupling.
- Familiarity with practical controller implementation, including feedforward design, notch and loop-shaping filters, discretization, and real-time embedded control.
- Experience using FRF measurement tools like dynamic signal analyzers or swept-sine and noise-based excitation.
- Experience with Python for data analysis.
- Ability to design structured test plans and compare controller performance against a baseline.
- Hands-on lab experience running experiments and analyzing measured data.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills for documenting and presenting technical results.
- Coursework or project experience in feedback control systems, including Bode and Nyquist plots and stability margins.
- Understanding of dynamic system modeling, transfer functions, and state-space representations.
Location & details#
- Location: Milpitas, California
- Term: Rolling
- Work Modality: On-site
- Employment Type: Full-time
- Compensation: Paid position
