About the role#
Keysight's AI team builds adaptive engineering intelligence systems where measurement, simulation, and machine learning converge. This PhD internship focuses on the agentic layer that makes these systems usable for engineering teams. You will design, build, and evaluate an agentic flow that takes a new use case and stands up a modeling and optimization workflow with minimal manual configuration. The agent must analyze data, propose and validate a setup, connect to relevant tools, and explain its choices and results. A central constraint is that the agent's output must be auditable, reproducible, and reliable.
What you'll do#
- Build an agentic flow that configures data preparation, model training, and optimization for new use cases.
- Develop tool integrations connecting the agent to simulation, data, and analysis systems.
- Implement autonomous data analysis so the agent can characterize unfamiliar datasets.
- Build explainability into the flow, documenting why a configuration was chosen and the resulting model's dependencies.
- Design guardrails such as validation before expensive runs, bounded actions, and compute budgets.
- Assemble a benchmark of representative engineering use cases with objective success criteria.
- Measure task-completion reliability and result quality against an expert-configured baseline.
- Collaborate across AI research, software engineering, RF design, and test and measurement domains.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- Strong Python and software engineering skills, including modular code, version control, and reproducible pipelines.
- Hands-on experience building LLM agents, including tool and function calling, orchestration, and context management.
- Demonstrated rigor in evaluating non-deterministic systems, including benchmark design and automated scoring.
- A portfolio of agent or LLM systems built, with code and an explanation of how they were evaluated.
- Working knowledge of data preparation, model selection, training, and optimization.
- Sound judgment regarding when an agent should act, ask, or refuse.
- Clear communication skills for both AI researchers and domain engineers.
- Preferred: Industry experience shipping agent or LLM-based systems, experience with multi-agent frameworks, MCP, optimization, surrogate modeling, RF or electromagnetic engineering, and familiarity with C++.
Location & details#
- Location: Calabasas, California, United States.
- Term: Fall 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- Status: Full-time internship.
- Compensation: $51-$56 per hour.
- Requirement: Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as of September 2027.
