About the role#
Kairos Power is seeking interns for the Civil Structures team for Summer 2027. This role offers hands-on experience supporting the design, analysis, and development of advanced reactor structures. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers on first-of-a-kind nuclear energy technologies, gaining practical skills in engineering analysis, structural design, and experimental investigative methods.
What you'll do#
- Learn and apply building codes, structural design codes, and engineering standards to civil and structural projects.
- Perform engineering calculations and structural analyses using hand calculations and finite element analysis software such as ANSYS.
- Evaluate structural designs under static, dynamic, blast, vibration, thermal, and fatigue loading conditions.
- Develop and maintain 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using CAD software.
- Prepare engineering reports, technical documentation, and presentations to support design and analysis activities.
- Assist in the evaluation of structural materials and contribute to the development of structural component specifications.
- Collaborate with engineers across multiple disciplines to support design development, testing, and continuous improvement.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a B.S. or M.S. program for Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with CAD software, with a preference for SolidWorks.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with scripting languages like Python or Excel Macros is considered a plus.
- Experience with explicit dynamics analysis is considered a plus.

- Locations: Alameda, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; or Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is a full-time, on-site internship.
- Note: This position is located in a facility that handles information subject to export control restrictions by the Department of Energy under 10 CFR Part 810. Authorization to access this information is required.
