About the role#
We are developing Generative AI systems to support scientific work across discovery and translational research. Much of this work involves outputs where quality is subjective, such as scientific plausibility, reasoning, and novelty. Because experts may disagree on these factors, we are looking for a PhD student to help us build AI judges that reflect expert judgment and uncertainty rather than collapsing feedback into a single score.
What you'll do#
- Investigate how methods for modeling subjective human judgment can be adapted to scientific evaluation contexts.
- Explore approaches for building AI judges calibrated to different scientific users or reviewer groups.
- Help define scientific quality beyond correctness, including how an AI judge assesses plausibility and reasoning quality.
- Build small benchmark datasets or annotation samples that capture expert disagreement on scientific report quality.
- Prepare a final readout summarizing the research approach and findings.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in NLP, machine learning, computer science, biomedical informatics, data science, human-centered AI, or a related field.
- Research experience in areas like subjective alignment, human preference modeling, disagreement modeling, or related evaluation methods.
- Proficiency in Python and standard NLP or data science tools.
- Ability to analyze model outputs and identify patterns of agreement or disagreement.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Location & details#
- Location: Titusville, New Jersey
- Term: Summer 2026
- Modality: On-site
- Compensation: $23.50 to $52.50 per hour, based on program year, discipline, and experience.
- Benefits: Eligible for company-sponsored medical benefits, sick time, and participation in the company retirement plan.
