About the role#
The Human Factors Engineering (HFE) intern will join the Medical Devices Industrial Design, Human Factors, and User Experience team. This role focuses on improving patient outcomes by delivering user-centered design experiences for medical products, including hardware and software interfaces. You will work directly with product development teams to provide usability insights and contribute to the design process.
What you'll do#
- Apply human factors standards to inform new product designs and ensure safe, effective use.
- Assist in planning and conducting user research, including ethnography, focus groups, and usability testing.
- Analyze user feedback to generate design insights and actionable recommendations.
- Conduct root cause analysis for use-related problems identified during testing.
- Participate in the creation of user workflows and understand use environments.
- Contribute to human factors documentation, including test plans, risk analyses, and use specifications.
- Author study materials such as informed consent forms, recruitment screeners, and moderator guides.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Human Factors Engineering, Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
- Completion of at least the second year of a bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Demonstrated leadership or participation in campus programs or community service.
- Understanding of the research process and design principles.
- Knowledge of task and risk analysis methods, human perception, cognition, anthropometrics, biomechanics, and physiology.
- Familiarity with FDA, ISO, and AAMI usability regulations for medical devices.
- Ability to work on-site for a 4-month rotation.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without future sponsorship.

- Location: Raritan, New Jersey.
- Term: Winter 2027 (January to May).
- Modality: Full-time, on-site.
- Compensation: Paid position with an hourly range of $23.50 to $52.50, depending on program year, discipline, and experience.
