About the role#
As a Reinforcement Learning Intern, you will work with the research team to develop and evaluate reinforcement learning algorithms for surgical robotics. You will focus on supervised autonomy initiatives, primarily working with offline data collected from robotic systems. A key goal is to adapt these algorithms for the surgical domain and explore real-time control on the dV5 system.
What you'll do#
- Collect tele-operated simulation or real-world trajectory data from surgical robots.
- Train and benchmark off-the-shelf reinforcement learning algorithms, such as actor-critic or policy gradient methods.
- Adapt algorithms to improve performance within the surgical domain.
- Recommend experimental setups and algorithms for future development.
- Present your findings and experimental results to the broader team.
- Deploy your chosen algorithm in simulation or on the dV5 to validate real-time performance.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Doctorate-level degree program in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- You must be returning to your academic program after the internship.
- Deep experience with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or JAX.
- Strong familiarity with reinforcement learning algorithms.
- Experience with multimodal and video-based data analysis.
- Excellent communication skills to discuss experimental motivations and findings.
- A willingness to learn about robotics and its specific application to surgery.
Location & details#
- Location: Sunnyvale, California.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Duration: 10-12 weeks.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Full-time (approximately 40 hours per week).
