About the role#
The Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Intern will join our team for a 12-week program during Summer 2027. You will work on infrastructure projects involving roads, bridges, and utilities. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will apply your academic knowledge to real-world scenarios in the field. Interns are paired with staff members for mentorship and report to a team lead who provides feedback and training.
What you'll do#
- Monitor and test client and contractor work to ensure plans, specifications, and safety standards are met.
- Perform construction observation and conduct field tests for concrete, asphalt, and earthworks.
- Ensure all materials and procedures comply with the latest DOT standards.
- Record daily inspection notes for document management.
- Assist engineers with the development of spreadsheet tools.
- Copy and scan project-related drawings.
- Navigate construction sites and conduct inspections, which may include walking, standing, and climbing.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited college degree program in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (Junior or Senior status preferred).
- A 3.5 GPA or better is desired.
- Strong computer skills, including the MS Office suite.
- Above-average math calculation skills.
- Organization, planning, research, and resourcefulness.
- Ability to work well individually and as part of a team.
- A high school diploma.
- A current driver’s license with a safe 3-year driving record.
- US Citizenship or Green Card status.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD is preferred.
- Prior internship experience is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Charlotte, North Carolina.
- Work Modality: This is an on-site position requiring attendance at the office 5 days a week.
- Schedule: Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, though schedules may vary based on project needs. The role may require work at night, on weekends, or in varied environmental conditions.
