About the role#
This is a paid, full-time Nurse Extern position available for the Winter and Summer 2027 terms. You will work on-site at Independence Health System locations in Greensburg, Latrobe, and Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. This role involves rotating shifts, which may include standby or on-call duties.
What you'll do#
Under the direction of an RN preceptor, you will provide direct patient care and support the healthcare team. Your daily tasks include:
- Assessing patients, planning care, and evaluating outcomes.
- Performing nursing interventions, such as medication administration and reconciliation, according to policy.
- Implementing fall and VTE prevention measures.
- Assisting with diagnostic and treatment procedures.
- Helping patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene and dietary needs.
- Supporting patient mobility by ambulating, turning, and positioning.
- Answering call lights and reporting observations to the primary nurse.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for infection control.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Registered Nurse Program approved by the State Board of Nursing.
- For BSN students: You must be entering your senior year and have completed the medical/surgical clinical component.
- For Diploma/Associate students: You must be entering your final year.
- Proof of continued enrollment, passing grades, and good academic standing.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (CPR and AED).
- Valid Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI clearances.
