About the role#
This internship focuses on accelerating and scaling hybrid HPC-quantum applications. You will join a team working at the intersection of high-performance computing systems and quantum processors. Your work involves taking sequential proof-of-concept code and improving its performance through parallelization and GPU acceleration. You will collaborate with quantum scientists to help them distribute research code and demonstrate performance at scale.
What you'll do#
- Analyze sequential code to find opportunities for parallelization using shared-memory and distributed-memory techniques.
- Identify segments of code suitable for GPU offloading to improve performance.
- Run applications at scale using up to hundreds of GPUs.
- Evaluate performance and scalability to determine if new algorithms are competitive.
- Work alongside quantum scientists to understand the impact of your code optimizations on their research.
What you'll need#
- Proficiency in Python and at least one systems programming language such as C, C++, or Rust.
- Hands-on experience with HPC software like OpenMP, MPI, or CUDA.
- Experience developing and running parallel or distributed applications on multi-node HPC clusters, including using job schedulers like Slurm or LSF.
- GPU programming experience with CUDA, HIP, or portability layers like OpenMP target offload, Kokkos, or OpenACC.
- Familiarity with performance analysis, profiling tools, and GPU-accelerated numerical libraries.
- Background in numerical linear algebra, tensor networks, or Monte Carlo methods.
- Experience with computational chemistry, materials science, or condensed matter physics codes.
- Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, including Git, code review, testing, and CI/CD.
- Ability to bridge Python and compiled code to accelerate research prototypes.
- Exposure to quantum computing frameworks like Qiskit.
- Ability to communicate technical results clearly and work independently.
Location & details#
- Location: Yorktown Heights, New York, United States.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Status: Full-time internship, paid position.
