About the role#
IBM Research is looking for an intern to join the team for Summer 2027. This role focuses on the intersection of quantum computing, machine learning, and scientific computing. You will work alongside researchers to develop new methods for simulation and learning, while identifying specific problems where quantum resources provide a clear advantage over classical methods. Your project will be defined in collaboration with your mentor and may cover hybrid learning workflows, quantum models for data, or theory and benchmarking.
What you'll do#
- Develop quantum and hybrid algorithms for meaningful learning or simulation tasks.
- Build research prototypes and benchmark them against strong classical methods for accuracy, scalability, and resource requirements.
- Apply these methods to problems in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related domains.
- Analyze when quantum resources offer a genuine advantage and document all assumptions and costs.
- Share your results through technical reports, talks, open-source code, and potential conference submissions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a graduate program in quantum computing, computer science, physics, mathematics, statistics, or engineering.
- A strong foundation in quantum computing and quantum algorithms.
- Knowledge of linear algebra, probability, optimization, or numerical methods.
- Research experience in areas such as machine learning, quantum simulation, or hybrid quantum-classical methods.
- Experience writing research code in Python or a similar scientific language.
- Ability to conduct independent research, analyze results critically, and communicate findings clearly.
- Experience with Qiskit, scientific Python libraries, machine-learning frameworks, or Git.
- Familiarity with quantum machine learning methods, learning theory, or quantum-classical model comparisons.
- Experience running experiments on quantum processors or combining quantum measurement data with classical machine learning.
Location & details#
- Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- This is a paid, full-time internship.
