About the role#
The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is seeking a Graduate Intern to assist with digitization and archival processing projects within the Special Collections department. This 120-hour internship focuses on developing professional archival skills through hands-on experience, including the care and preservation of historical materials. The intern will work directly under the department head to complete specific projects that increase researcher access to the library's photograph collections.
What you'll do#
- Produce high-resolution scans of historical photographs and create associated metadata.
- Organize and label digital files to ensure they are accessible through online and onsite platforms.
- Curate digital photograph collections for the library's online archival database, including writing descriptions and historical context.
- Assess archival materials for preservation and assist with conservation practices.
- Provide research assistance to library patrons and prepare historical materials for display or presentation.
- Participate in additional special projects as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master’s Degree program in Public History or Library Science (archival focus preferred) from an accredited institution.
- Base knowledge of archival best practices, principles, and methods.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems with guidance.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with staff and community partners.
- Prior experience in digitization projects is preferred but not required.
- Ability to read and interpret historical documentation, including cursive handwriting or historical script.

- Location: Downtown Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville, AL.
- Term: Summer 2026, starting in June.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Paid at $17.50 per hour for a total of 120 hours ($2,100 total).
- Physical requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds.
