Graduate Intern - Special Collections

About the role#

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is seeking a graduate intern to support the Special Collections department. This 120-hour internship focuses on the digitization and processing of the library's photograph collection. The intern will work under the guidance of the department head to gain professional experience in archival care and preservation.

What you'll do#

• Perform high-resolution scanning of historical photographs and create associated metadata.
• Organize and label digital files to ensure they are accessible via online and onsite platforms.
• Curate at least five digital photograph collections for the library's online archival database, including writing descriptions and historical context.
• Assist in the assessment and preservation of archival materials.
• Provide research assistance to library patrons and prepare historical materials for display or presentation.
• Participate in special projects as assigned and contribute to internal library publications regarding the collections.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Master’s Degree program in Public History or Library Science (archival focus preferred) from an accredited institution.
• Foundational knowledge of professional archival principles, methods, and best practices.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems with guidance.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and proficiency with computer software.
• Ability to interpret historical documentation, including working knowledge of cursive handwriting or historical script.
• Prior experience with digitization projects is preferred but not required.

Location & details#

• Location: Downtown Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville, AL.
• Term: Summer 2026 (starting June 2026).
• Modality: On-site.
• Compensation: $17.50 per hour for a total of 120 hours.
• Physical requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, and lift up to 40 pounds. The work environment may include exposure to dust and mold.
