Systems Design Intern

About the role#

Hitachi Rail is seeking a Systems Design Intern for a 12-month term starting in September 2026. This full-time, paid position is based in Toronto and supports the design and analysis of complex rail systems. You will work within a team to deliver high-quality, safe guideway designs while gaining exposure to real-world engineering projects.

What you'll do#

• Perform system analysis, modeling, and simulation to specify system performance and verify train control systems.
• Analyze train characteristics and safety requirements, including safe braking models and headway requirements.
• Deliver project guideway application data, including signal plans, crossover coordinates, track maps, and guideway databases.
• Ensure all guideway designs adhere to applicable standards and signaling principles.
• Interface with software and test groups to resolve in-house and field test issues.
• Develop and maintain internal tools and assist in preparing technical simulations for proposals.

What you'll need#

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Systems, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (or an equivalent field).
• Proficiency in using AI tools such as Visual Studio and Copilot.
• Fluency in English with strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the full 12-month duration.
• Ability to work on-site in Toronto for a minimum of two days per week.
