About the role#
This is an unpaid internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program, designed for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. The program provides an opportunity to gain real-world experience during the final 180 days of active-duty service. Interns work closely with mentors and senior leadership to train as an Inside Machinist (Marine Mechanic) at the SEMAT Hawaii facility, supporting US Navy surface ships at Pearl Harbor.
What you'll do#
- Train in all aspects of machine shop operations, including setting up and operating conventional lathes, milling machines, band saws, and drill presses.
- Fabricate and refurbish shipboard components by following templates and technical specifications.
- Read and interpret complex ship drawings, technical manuals, and engineering documentation.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Develop controlled work packages, test documents, and technical reports according to Navy standards.
- Manage small fabrication projects, including scheduling, reporting, and delivery.
- Provide technical guidance to shipboard personnel and interface with Navy customers.
What you'll need#
- Must be active-duty military personnel within the final 180 days of service.
- Must be able to obtain a SECRET security clearance.
- Previous experience operating a lathe is required.
- Ability to read and interpret ship drawings, technical documents, and manuals.
- Proficiency with mechanical equipment and tools used for ship repairs.
- Ability to lift 30+ pounds and perform physical work in a shop environment.
- Must provide your own hand tools per trade specialty.
