About the role#
This is an unpaid internship through the DoD SkillBridge program, specifically designed for transitioning active-duty U.S. military personnel within their final 180 days of service. You will train as an Inside Machinist (Marine Mechanic) at the HII Mission Technologies SEMAT facility in Pearl Harbor. The program focuses on providing real-world experience in machining, fabrication, and shipboard component refurbishment, with the goal of preparing participants for potential full-time employment.
What you'll do#
- Train under the supervision of an HII mentor to develop proficiency in machine shop operations.
- Set up and operate conventional lathes, milling machines, band saws, and drill presses.
- Fabricate and refurbish shipboard components using templates and technical specifications.
- Read and interpret complex ship drawings, technical manuals, and engineering documentation.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers and calipers, to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Manage small fabrication projects, including scheduling, reporting, and delivery.
- Develop controlled work packages and quality inspection documentation according to Navy standards.
What you'll need#
- Must be active-duty military within the final 180 days of service.
- Ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance.
- Demonstrated experience operating a lathe.
- Proficiency with mechanical equipment and tools used for ship repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret ship drawings and technical manuals.
- Must provide your own hand tools per trade specialty.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting 30+ lbs.
