About the role#
As an Intern, Power Electronics Controls Engineer, you will work on the dynamic modeling, controller design, implementation, and validation for power converters. You will also handle system analysis and integration tasks. You will work alongside circuit-design and firmware engineers to solve engineering problems.
What you'll do#
- Evaluate system-level requirements and translate them into dynamic performance and controls specifications.
- Analyze and model converter topologies and architectures while working with the hardware team to evaluate engineering trade-offs.
- Design controller architecture to meet dynamic objectives and capture these designs in Matlab/Simulink.
- Perform small-signal modeling to tune and stabilize controller responses.
- Review electrical schematics to ensure signal acquisition and the plant can handle transients and edge-cases.
- Translate algorithms from Simulink into C code.
- Create and use hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) setups for validation.
- Support prototype bring-up, execution of stress-test plans, and design behaviors for thermal, reliability, and compliance testing.
- Develop behaviors for end-of-line testing in volume production.
- Review fleet data to create performance improvement and failure mitigation strategies.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong electrical engineering fundamentals.
- Familiarity with simple power conversion topologies and dynamic models.
- Ability to write and troubleshoot C code.
- Hands-on circuit troubleshooting experience.
- Preferred: Experience with grid-tied inverter systems, modular architectures, multi-level topologies, and grid-code requirements like IEEE1547, IEEE2800, or UL1741.
- Preferred: Experience in high-volume production, power system modeling, and PV conversion systems including MPPT and arc-fault detection.
Location & details#
- Location: Scotts Valley, California, United States.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
- Term: Rolling.
- Compensation: Paid internship.
- Sponsorship: Not available.
