About the role#
The materials engineering team develops the metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites needed to operate current and next generation nuclear fusion systems. As an intern, you will contribute to this research by performing laboratory experiments, analyzing data, and documenting findings. This is a 12-week, full-time, on-site position based in Everett, Washington.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the research and development of new materials.
- Conduct experiments to test material performance under various conditions.
- Perform material characterization, including sample preparation, instrument operation, and data acquisition.
- Analyze test data to identify trends and optimize material properties.
- Support characterization efforts using microscopy, spectroscopy, and mechanical testing.
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations.
- Present results during weekly team meetings and at the year-end intern showcase.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss project progress.
- Assist in literature reviews to guide laboratory experiments.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Graduate (Master’s or PhD) program in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- A fundamental background in materials science principles, including material properties, thermodynamics, and mechanics.
- Experience with laboratory techniques and material characterization tools.
- Proficiency in data analysis and familiarity with software tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Origin.
- A willingness to learn.

- Location: Everett, WA.
- Term: Summer 2027 (12 consecutive weeks).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $59 per hour.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
