About the role#
As a Plasma Diagnostics Intern, you will join the Science team to help us understand the performance of our fusion machines. You will work on non-invasive optical probes that measure plasma parameters like density, temperature, and shape. This work helps us fine-tune machine operation to achieve fusion.
What you'll do#
- Conceive, design, test, and deploy optical diagnostic components and systems.
- Prototype and bench test optical diagnostics, such as polarimetry or components of optical interferometers.
- Understand basic operations and bench test potential upgrades to performance.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant experience in plasmas.
- GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Basic understanding of benchtop optical test and measurement.
- Basic proficiency with optical fiber alignment.
- General optical lab experience and basic knowledge of laser safety.
- Proficiency with analysis software such as MATLAB or Python.
- Optical modeling software skills such as Zemax are a plus.
- Ability to complete your PhD program and start full-time employment no later than May 2028.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship based on-site in Everett, Washington.
- The term is for Summer 2027, requiring a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks on-site.
